Waldorf-Inspired Virtual Classes

MathClass6

Lotus & Ivy provides live, interactive Waldorf math classes online for 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade. We follow the Jamie York Math Academy curriculum for our live math classes.

2024 - 2025 Class 6 Math

Tuesdays & Thursdays at 3:30pm ET / 12:30pm PT

or

Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays at 3:30pm ET / 12:30pm PT

Our Class 6 Math Lessons are live and students are invited to interact with the teacher and ask questions as part of class time.

We offer two options for Class 6 math. The first option is our two-day per week class and the second option is our three-day per week class.

  • Class 6 Math, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30pm ET / 1:30pm PT with Ms. Domokos

  • Class 6 Math, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 2:30pm ET / 11:30am PT with Ms. Murray

The three-day per week class gives students an additional day with the teacher and more time to practice concepts. The two-day per week class is more accelerated and is recommended for the student who doesn’t need the extra time. Both classes cover the complete grade-level curriculum outlined below, but the two-day per week class may go more in depth into a topic since students in this class are ready to move at a faster pace with fifth grade foundational concepts.

Our approach to math is to make it meaningful for the students. We bring real-world application to our lessons, and we help the students see the patterns and beauty of math that exist all around them in the natural world. Calling forth a wonder for numbers is important in helping the students sense the beauty of the world in which they live.

Sixth grade students are presented with their first formulas in math, and we introduce formulas through real-world topics such as interest on money, tax, discount, temperature conversion, travel time and speed. We bring the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages full circle so that students can gain mastery in converting between them.

A theme of Sixth grade math is “Business Math” and students are quite interested to learn how a bank works as a retailer, how much money is paid in interest on a mortgage, minimum wage, profit, Gross Domestic Product and many other topics that help them understand how things work in the real world. We continue our study of Geometry in Sixth grade, now with more precision as we use a compass and protractor.

Teachers assign math homework for students to complete outside of class and students are required to purchase a math workbook, Making Math Meaningful, Grade Six, as part of their supply list.

In addition to the individual homework, students will be assigned to a math group where they will meet once a week outside of class time, via Zoom, to work on group math assignments.  The students can work with their group mates to determine a convenient time for all members.  The group meeting should last about 45 minutes each week. Class 6 students can expect to spend 1.5 - 2 hours outside of math class on individual math homework. Assessments are given, but no formal grading is given until Class 7.

Students DO NOT need to be enrolled in Lotus & Ivy Main Lesson Classes to enroll in Lotus & Ivy Math courses.

PLEASE NOTE: THE MATH MAIN LESSON BLOCKS FOR CLASS 6 ARE GEOMETRY II AND BUSINESS MATH. THESE TWO MAIN LESSONS ARE TAUGHT AS PART OF THE LOTUS & IVY CLASS 6 MAIN LESSON CLASS, NOT THE CLASS 6 MATH CLASS. TOGETHER, THE 2 MATH MAIN LESSON BLOCKS AND CLASS 6 MATH CLASS MAKE THE FULL MATH CURRICULUM, WHICH PROVIDES A SOLID AND RIGOROUS MATH FOUNDATION.

WE OFFER MATH A LA CARTE OR IN COMBINATION WITH ANY OF OUR OTHER CLASSES. Please contact us if you have questions.
