Expectations

Teachers provide math homework to do outside of class. Class 2 students can expect to spend 1 hour per week outside of this class on homework.

Class 2 Language Arts

Class 2 Main Lessons are inspired by animal fables and stories of the great Helpers of Humanity (traditionally known as “saints”). At this stage of development, these stories meet the child’s rich inner life, speaking to both their sense of mischief and their growing moral awareness.

Alongside traditional tales, we include stories and figures from a diversity of cultures, reflecting the wider human experience. The fables mirror the many sides of our nature, while the Helpers of Humanity offer living images of courage, compassion, and transformation. In this way, children receive not abstract lessons, but nourishing “soul food” that meets them where they are.

Writing arises naturally through copywork, sentence practice, and collaborative composition, with spelling woven meaningfully into the work.

Students do not need to be enrolled in Lotus & Ivy Main Lesson Class to enroll in Lotus & Ivy Math or Language Arts Skills Practice; however, most students in the Math & Language Arts Skills Practice class are also in the Main Lesson class. If registering a la carte for Math or Language Arts Skills Practice, we recommend you follow the same Main Lesson block rotation at home.

Please Note: There are two math main lesson blocks for Class 2. These are taught as part of the Lotus & Ivy Main Lesson Classes. Both our main lesson classes and our Math & Language Arts Practice classes, together, are part of the full Lotus & Ivy curriculum, which provides a solid, whole-child, and rigorous math education. We encourage students to enroll in our Math and Language Arts Skills program, in addition to our main lesson classes, because it gives children a year-long course in age-appropriate math and language arts topics in addition to the math and language main lessons.
